Harbour masters, and their wider team, are uniquely responsible for managing marine safety in the port. Nowadays, the management of shipping movements within confined waters, together with vessel safety and security, are complex and demanding tasks. This requires a comprehensive knowledge of relevant legislation, risk control techniques and navigational management.

The course was developed in partnership with the International Harbour Masters' Association (IHMA) and the UK Harbour Masters' Association (UKHMA), and is recognised by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) as a professional foundation and development distance learning course for harbour masters and their personnel.
